The Rainbow List
The Rainbow List is a private mailing list used by the LGBT communities in the Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, and Cambridge areas to help strengthen our communities and encourage us to work together. The Rainbow List does this by creating a safe environment in which we can contact each other via email quickly and confidentially.
The Rainbow-Lite List is a digest version of the Rainbow List. It has the same content, but the email messages are saved up and bunched together into a single large email message that is sent out once every day or two.
These lists are very different from public spaces like websites (such as the Tri-Pride website and the Gays and Lesbians of Waterloo website) and newsgroups (like can.motss) -- where anyone can have a look without asking permission to do so. When you make a request to join our lists, you are indicating that in some sense you feel some commitment to our communities.
You can expect to see the following kinds of messages on the Rainbow List:
- announcements of upcoming local-area events open to the public (discussion groups, parties, dances, radio shows) that may be of special interest to the LGBT communities in the Waterloo-Wellington Region.
- announcements of upcoming films and television programs that may be of special interest to the LGBT communities in the Waterloo-Wellington Region.
- comments on films and television programs that have shown recently, that may be of interest to us. Some of these comments are rather light-hearted in nature.
- comments on current political and legal events of interest to our LGBT communities.
- announcements by people who are trying to start up new groups and who want some feedback.
The above is not meant to be complete; it just gives an idea of the nature of most of the messages to the Rainbow List. By no means are all of the messages serious in nature.
Subscribers to the Rainbow List are expected to respect other subscribers by refraining from sending:
- chain letters or get-rich-quick letters;
- computer virus warnings; to verify that a warning is genuine (most are not), go to the Norton AntiVirus Research Center and search their database;
- other emails with no LBGT content that you received via the Internet - for more information on Internet chain mail like the Nieman Marcus Cookie recipe see Current Internet Hoaxes at the Urban Legends site;
- blatant commercial advertisements;
- personal ads (requests to meet for romance/sex);
- flaming or abusive responses, whether public or private.
